Subject: Robotics position.
To: mas at SU-AI
Sounds interesting. I am currently working for the GTE robotics group
in Lexington. Management is doing strange things to the project, and it
is not clear if we are going to do robotics much longer.
I was/am mostly involved with low level interfacing code. We now
have our unimation puma connected to our vax, bypassing the lsi-11 and val.
We have been doing some experiments with current control as a form of
limited force control (unfortunately open ended, and with low bandwith
on sampling (28ms between samples)).
If you could send more details, and/or give me a call at (617)646-4162 (h)
or (617)466-4091 (w).

Ralph Gorin pays students from $6.00 to $8.00 an hour, or about $1,050

Skyline Motor Inn, a best Western motel at 10th and 50th.
Festival Plan, $20 pp per night
you should specifically mention this plan
the Empire Hotel across from Lincoln center (JMH)
hotels
The Adams Hotel is on the upper East side, right across from Central Park,
near the Met and the Frick. I think it's $50-60/night.
There are several hotels on the east side around 30 St. that
advertise themselves as being cheap (<$40/night) and pleasant,
but the neighborhood is not so great.
It also depends on when you're coming. I stayed at the Plaza
for $80 for one night, in a room that's normally $180. This was
in late August.
CHINESE
Hop Kee 212 964-8365 or 962-8149
21 Mott St., New York
Cantonese; they are famous for their clam dishes and the fact that
they are open all night. Reasonable prices [MRC-77].
Hunan Balcony 212 850-2120
2596 Broadway, New York City
Hours: Sun-Thu noon-11pm, Fri-Sat noon-midnight, AX,BAC,MC,DC
Of the dozens of Hunan places which have been springing up on the
upper west side, this is by all accounts one of the best.
Potstickers only so-so, but everything else quite up to California
standards. I had a fine Peking Duck, and yummy Yu Shiang Scallops,
among others [BH-78].
Szechuan Imperial Restaurant
228 E. 45th Street
New York, NY 10017
(between 2nd and 3rd Aves)
867-3070 599-9669
The decor is not very oriental (Wood panelling, not well lit, looks like a converted
bar), but the food was good. The pot-stickers ("fried dumplings") were quite good,
served with chili sauce rather than hot oil and vinegar. I forget what else I ate,
but it was comparable in quality to the better Szechaun restaurants in this area.
Temple Garden 212 233-5544
16 Pell, (Chinatown) New York
The New York Times rated them with four stars, probably because they
are excellent. Mostly Shanghai. The pastries are much better than
Boston; but not as good a selection [MRC-77].
CUBAN
Oscar's Cuban restaurant, NY
Victor's Cafe, East Side
DELICATESSEN
Carnegie Delicatessen
7th near 54th street, New York
Here the corned beef is the thing. Cheaper than the Stage Deli down
the street, but still high [RAK-1/78].
Shmulka Bernstein's
Delancey and Essex Sts., New York
If you like a real Jewish delicatessen, this is the place to go. The
best pastrami sandwiches anywhere. They have chinese food, which is
good only in that it is kosher [ARK-77:9/80].
GERMAN
Bavarian Inn 212 650-1056
232 86th Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave., New York
Hours: closes around 1am.
Very good German food and beer. True German atmosphere; the waitors
and waitresses are German and wear old-fashioned Bavarian costume;
they also have (or had) a guy playing a zither there most nights in
addition to the background beer hall music. This is a very German
part of NYC (and a good area for singles too!) so standards are quite
high [MRC-77]. Informal, fun atmosphere, live music (German singer,
zither accompaniment), not too expensive. Food is authentic, good,
but not excellent. Reasonably priced [BPM-6/80].
GREEK
Z Restaurant 212 GR 3-3900
117 E. 15th Street, New York
I've eaten here 20 times over four years. Best Greek food I've ever
had. Cheap. All dishes superb [MLM-76].

Woodland Ave (our street)- take a 90 degree right (not a hard right) and
go around 5 or 6 curves till you get to 1395.
From downtown Palo Alto/Stanford: Go out University and take left at
second light past Middlefield (Chaucer). Go one block til you cross creek
then turn right onto Woodland. Always bear right and hug the creek til
